We were engaged to assist a family in the sale of their family home — a house that had been in their possession for many years.
The lady of the house, now in care with dementia, had lost her beautiful engagement ring in the house 25 years prior. Each day when mother awoke, she would realise she didn’t have her ring — every day was the first day.
We emptied the house, cleaned throughout, and on my final walk-through I opened the wardrobe in the master bedroom. A glint between the floorboards caught my eye. I carefully prised the boards apart and pulled out a ring.
When I placed the ring in the daughter’s hand, the reaction was pure emotion and relief.
By far my most precious find
Working with a client, I was asked to attend a nondescript family home to conduct an evaluation — looking for items of possible value or interest.
At a distance, a painting stopped me in my tracks. It had such character and presence that one was immediately drawn to it. I asked the owner what they knew of it. Years previously, they said, it had been a gift from a wealthy relative.
Following the right procedures, I contacted the specialist who handles the catalogue raisonné for the artist in question. I collected the painting, travelled with it personally, and delivered it for evaluation.
They asked me to return the following day.
When I collected the painting, I was told it would be included in the next catalogue raisonné.
